University of Idaho Orders Hiring Freeze |
Posted: Wednesday, November 26, 2008
MOSCOW, ID - The University of Idaho is instituting a hiring freeze and suspending all non-essential state-funded travel to help deal with state ordered budget cuts. Glenn Mosley reports.
The order from UI President Steven Daley-Laursen came Monday in a statewide e-mail to the university employees.
Daley-Laursen said that the UI is looking at a scenario in which state ordered holdbacks over the next two fiscal years could total anywhere from five to ten percent, resulting in a permanent budget reduction. A five percent holdback would mean a cut of about five million dollars, for example, out of the UI’s $96 million general education account.
The university is also facing increases in other areas, such as utilities, liability insurance, and city services.
Administrators and deans are looking at budgets around the university to prioritize some programs while cutting others.
Daley-Laursen says that an increase in enrollment would help offset state budget cuts.
