SEATTLE - Colton Harris-Moore, nicknamed the Barefoot Bandit, made his appearance before a federal judge in Seattle Thursday. In the brief hearing, Harris-Moore appeared to be wearing shoes as well as a khaki jumpsuit. He waived his rights to a detention hearing, agreeing to remain in custody until he is arraigned. Harris-Moore faces one federal charge for flying a stolen Cessna across state lines. But Jenny Durkan, U.S. Attorney for western Washington, says the 19-year-old could eventually face a long list of state and federal charges.
Durkan says the government sought to keep Harris-Moore in custody because he has shown a pattern of flight, and poses risks to society.
Durkan: "There are a number of aircraft stolen, flown in ways without a license in ways that were a danger to the public, there are firearms that were stolen in a number of locations, and we believe he presented a clear danger to the public."
The government also argued against releasing Harris-Moore to his mother’s custody, since she has publicly urged him to flee. Harris-Moore evaded arrest for over two years after escaping from a group home in Renton, Washington. But he was captured in the Bahamas last week.
