New Anti-Speeding Campaign Begins in Washington State
Posted: Monday, July 26, 2010

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Speed demons, listen up. The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission has a new campaign targeted at the state's speeders. It's called Slow Down or Pay Up.

Brian Jones of the traffic safety commission says it's not just about speed traps or extra police. The aim is to change driver behavior - much like the now-ubiquitous "Click It or Ticket" and "Drive Hammered, Get Nailed" campaigns.

Brian Jones: "Those models have been perfectly very successful, so we're using that same kind of a format to address speeding."

There's no data yet on how many tickets have been issued. More than 1,000 people were killed by speeders in the past five years in Washington state. The goal of the program is to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from car crashes by the year 2030.
