Weekend Edition Host/Producer
Location: Position Type: Full-time Administrative/Professional
Pullman, WA Salary: $30,000 to $36,000, DOQ
Effective Date: May 1, 2007

Summary of Duties/Qualifications

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for main control board operation of Northwest Public Radio’s broadcast stations during assigned shifts and will serve as local host of Weekend Edition. Responsible for producing pre-recorded elements, such as underwriting announcements and station promotional and fundraising spots as assigned.

REPORTS TO:        Program Director

SUPERVISES:        No supervisory duties required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
35% E Local host for Weekend Edition and other weekend programs, including making live local announcements during programming. Closely monitors radio transmitters, audio signal, and quality. Initiates established corrective procedures when malfunction occurs. Turns transmitters on and off as shift responsibility or engineering maintenance requires. Maintains written logs and operations reports in accordance with station and federal procedures and policies.

30% E Produces pre-recorded announcements, including station underwriting, promotional, and fundraising announcements. Operates all studio equipment and automation interfaces. Monitors NPR-DACS and Emergency Alert System for urgent news and network programming elements.

20% E Fill-in announcer for other shifts as assigned.

5% E Producing content for Northwest Public Radio web site as assigned.

5% E Participates in on-air fund drives by delivering ad lib solicitations.

5% Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated experience as an on-air host and in audio production.  Demonstrated interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.   Skills in organizing and expressing ideas in oral and written communications.   Must be able to effectively operate multi-station radio network board and monitor remote transmitters with a minimum of errors.  Experience in Windows operating system is desirable.  Demonstrated commitment to, and experience successfully advocating for diversity and the values diversity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Ability to communicate effectively.  Ability to interact appropriately with a variety of individuals including customers/clients.  Ability to use mental skills to recall, analyze, organize information and make complex decisions. Must be organized with strong writing, editing and production skills.  Must have on-air presence compatible with NWPR sound. 

WORK CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Extended work at master control board, telephone and computer required. Some travel to Northwest Public Radio community outreach events may be required, using university motor pool vehicles.  Must have valid driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree; two years full-time professional radio broadcast experience, including “air” board operation; and a valid driver’s license.  Experience in radio on-air broadcasting may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for education and professional radio experience. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in public radio, competence in using Windows computer operating systems, digital production experience, and demonstrated excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
