ORGANIZATION AND         Educational & Public Media

LOCATION:                Academic Media Services (AMS)

 

WORKING TITLE:           Videoconferencing Operator

BASIC FUNCTION:          This position operates electronic classroom production and network equipment, assists in the production of course and program materials and leads part-time local operations personnel.

REPORTS TO:              Pullman Site Coordinator

SUPERVISORYRESPONSIBILITIES:        May direct the work of hourly employees.

 

DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES:        35% E  Oversee and maintain network switching and local site operations.  Troubleshoot network and operational situations as they develop.  Work with off-site system-wide personnel to report and actively resolve problems encountered by distance education and videoconference users.  Monitor network status and digital switches in support of scheduled programs, courses, and events.  Work closely with network technicians and engineers to alert them of outages or other problems, provide operational assistance as each situation deems necessary.  Monitor network automated switching system and make switches as required.  Maintain videotape library and checkout procedures.

                        

                       35% E  Operate interactive television production equipment and network switches in support of scheduled classes, programs or events.  Perform setup and operation of equipment that makes up the electronic classrooms and other system facilities.  Work with faculty to meet programmatic objectives.  Setup and support scheduled videoconferences and special event.  Transport videoconferencing equipment to various on- and off-campus locations.  Serve as site facilitator for videoconferences and provide material support as required.  Provide all users with assistance in making the interactive television environment supportive of their meeting or course objectives. 

 

                       15% E  Assist users in the production of professional quality instructional and presentational material.  Serve as resource person for the university community on the technology and practices utilized by WHETS.  Identify areas needing improvements and offer expertise and assistance as required.  Assist faculty in the electronic gathering and creation of course materials.  Setup, operate, and edit materials gathered on campus or at remote locations in support of presentations in the electronic classroom.  Duplicate, label, and ship course material to distance education students as required to support scheduled courses.

                         10% E  Oversee local operations personnel.  Assist in the training, orientation, and supervision of student or part-time employees.  Direct and schedule the work of these employees.  Actively participate in the professional and educational growth of all employees, with particular attention to students.

 

                         5%     Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES  

·         Broad knowledge of distance learning equipment and technical requirements.  

·         Knowledge of basic principles and practices of supervisory techniques.

·         Previous experience in distance learning technology preferred. 

·         Ability to organize and plan schedules. 

·         Ability to work with people in coordination of distance learning/production efforts. 

·         Good communication, leadership and interpersonal relationship skills.

·         Ability to read and comprehend audio and video metering devices for proper levels. 

·         Ability to memorize various routing sequences, telephone numbers and command strings used on a daily basis.

Work Conditions:

·         Most of the work is performed in a control room environment but interactions between classrooms and adjacent control room space are periodically necessary.  This may be indoors or outside in any weather condition.

  • Intense emotional situations may exist which necessitate incumbent’s ability to lend a calming influence and control.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel across campus and access various types of buildings.
  • Ability to move computer equipment and furniture on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, kneel, and be mobile in the workplace.
  • Ability to sit and operate equipment with multi-dimensional controls for up to 8 hours a day, ability to stand for short periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Speech, visual, and hearing abilities that are sufficient to read and view written materials, various level of detail on video and computer monitors and effectively communicate and interact with WSU staff and the public—both in person, over the telephone, and from microphones. 
  • Ability to climb a ladder to adjust lighting and place set equipment.

·         Ability to use hand(s) for repetitive: single grasping, pushing & pulling, keyboarding/entering numbers and fine manipulation on a daily basis.

·         Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

High school graduation or equivalent and two years of experience in electronics, television operations or video production, including one year as a TV/Video Equipment Operator I or equivalent, OR equivalent education /experience.

 

May require evening, weekend, holiday and/or split shift work.  Previous video production and/or distance learning experience preferred.   Minimum qualifications: High school graduation or equivalent and two years of experience in electronics, television operations or production.
