Shootings Of Sikhs In Wisconsin Resonate Among Temples In The Northwest
The deadly shootings of Sikhs in Wisconsin over the weekend are resonating among temples in the Northwest, too.
Oregon and Washington have five main Sikh temples called “gurdwaras.” One is outside Seattle, and two are in Vancouver. Eugene and Salem each have one.
Navneet Kaur is a spokeswoman for the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple in Salem. On Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud, Kaur said her place of worship keeps its doors open to the public. But she says the recent attack is testing that.
Kaur: “So we welcome everybody. But there was this Caucasian guy who came in, and he had food, and then he was just looking around. That just suddenly, put us on guard. And I went up to him and was like ‘Can I help you with something?’ I was ashamed afterwards, for doing that.”
Kaur says leaders at the Salem temple are planning a possible vigil to respond to the killings in Wisconsin.
